In this part, we will continue with the power of self-improvement and knowledge through professional education and the importance of knowing your rights.
Table of Contents
5. Invest in self-improvement and knowledge (continued)
f. Invest in your Professional education
Any sort of professional education is a must for anyone with a job out there. Any job can become easier or significantly better with the addition of better techniques.
Some people think that learning more about your job is only about career advancement. That is totally untrue. In my mind, career advancement has more to do with whose bottom you must smooch (i.e. company politics) and less about the kind of skills you have.
Understanding which skill sets you have and what other skills you may require in order to be better at your job is essential for your quality of life. I don’t think there is a person out there who does not want to make their life easier, especially when it comes to the working environment.
Continuing education
Continuing education is one way to do this. Depending on your line of work and employment, there are many choices to become more skillful and add new techniques to your professional toolbox. Attending seminars by experts in your field is one way. You can also have your company endorse your education and in some cases they may be tax deductible if you actually pay them yourself (Note: I am not an accountant. You will need check with your accountant on that).
Pick subjects that you are very enthusiastic about and you will get even more benefit. Or you can choose something that can help your current situation (for example, better management of your team). This is totally up to you. Ideally you should have a roadmap of what types of trainings you would like to take up and discuss these with your manager or employer.
It will also show how serious you are about your profession and your commitment to the company. However, in order for the latter to be obvious make sure that you select trainings that can actually benefit your company otherwise they will be denied.
g. Invest in knowing Your rights
Knowing your rights as a human being and as a citizen is a very important matter. Many people do not even know their own rights and end up being manipulated in their personal or professional environment.
How can you be healthy, stress-free and live a healthy life if your boss, landlord or friends take advantage of you on a daily basis?
And how will you know what is best for you, if you do not actually know what you are entitled to in the first place, in order to defend your interests?
For the reasons listed above, it is of the utmost importance to educate yourself on:
- Your basic Human rights,
- Your Rights in the workplace,
- Your Housing rights (if you are renting or buying),
- What the law says about various personal, professional and financial situations.
An extra step: Consult with specialists
Having a good lawyer and a good tax accountant or financial advisor can often make the difference between living in fear and living in true freedom, away from the claws of people who want to exploit you in every way imaginable.
But despite that, it is your own personal responsibility to educate yourself on those matters and then stand up for yourself when the time calls for it. This is not something that will happen overnight. You will need to practice time and time again and you will be tested under pressure, but in the end, no one will be able to take things away from you if you are truly in the right.
This concludes part 5 of the 7 part series. In part 6 we will look into the importance of stress, professional education and making progress. Until then be strong, healthy and free.
