Before you read this part, make sure you start from the top and read all the previous articles in the series. You can read part 1 here, part 2 here, part 3 here.

In this article, we will continue with the power of self-improvement and knowledge.

5. Invest in self-improvement and knowledge (continued)

d.Invest in Health Education

Most of the people reading my work are interested in living a healthy and happy life. But how can you be healthy when you do not know what health is and how you can achieve and sustain it?

This entire blog is dedicated to exactly that. Educating people on nutrition and proper dietary habits (including the use of supplements and herbs), overall wellness (social, professional, emotional, mental, spiritual, etc.) and everything else you may need to know and practice in order to achieve your health goals.

However, it does not contain all the information you may need. Proactiveness is the way to go. Every time you find something interesting on this blog, browse through the other articles and see if you can find answers that add to that specific subject.

Then once you have done that, you can continue your research on google and see what else you can find. You may find contradictory information on the matter or you may find things to support it. In the former case, use your common sense to see what is valid and also how it may apply in your own specific case.

The next step to getting a proper education on health is to talk to a certified medical professional. This blog and the information found on the net can be a starting point, but your doctor is the only person who can be fully responsible for your case as he or she may know everything about it and they can make the right decisions or guide you to where you really need to go.

If you are still confused after your doctor’s advice, you can seek secondary advice from another doctor who specializes on a specific subject. For example, your general practitioner might only have general knowledge and may not be able to answer your questions on hormonal optimization. However, a doctor who specializes in hormones may have exactly the answers you seek.

e. Invest in Physical Education

Physical education is important for people who exercise and this is why it is a separate subject. There are people who believe that they can be healthy without movement. That is a lie. As we age, our movement becomes more and more restricted and once we reach the point of no return, our daily movement will be connected to pain making our existence a living hell.

People need to be educated on the merits of different forms of movement such as:

  • Exercising by moving or lifting weights (kettlebells, clubbells, free weights, machines etc.)
  • Sustaining or expanding our flexibility through yoga, stretching or pilates,
  • Understanding movement and proper mobility through yoga, tai chi, martial arts, dancing,
  • Understanding the importance of restoring our muscles and joints after their daily punishment through gentle yoga, tai chi, Qi Kung or massage.
  • Understanding the importance of healthy posture and striving to achieve it by focusing on our bodies’ individual needs through yoga, tai chi, chiropractic sessions or by educating ourselves on what proper posture is.
  • Understanding the value of daily movement and minimizing the use of vehicles for small distances.

In order to do any of the above, we will need the guidance of experts. Some of the practices mentioned above are not easy or safe when performed without the supervision of a qualified expert.

You will need a coach, a yoga, tai chi or martial arts teacher and other types of experts in order to properly practice these forms of movement with safety, proper form and to be able to achieve results and make progress.

Some forms may look easier than others (“how hard can be to just lift weights?”) but do not underestimate the power of getting proper physical education (especially about proper form). Even if you actually learn to do things by yourself and even if you magically avoid injury after years of training, if you don’t have the basics down right and your form is poor, you will eventually end up in a situation that can be dangerous to your health.

Deadlifting double or triple your bodyweight with improper form or without the required safety precautions or practicing pranayama in the wrong way, can land you in the emergency ward.

Do not make that mistake. Learn the basics and then practice by yourself if you want to. But nothing beats guidance from experts.

This concludes part 4 of the 7 part series. In part 5, we will look into the importance of spiritual education along with the importance of knowing your rights. Until then stay strong, healthy and free.
